To what extent are faculty ready to participate in the OER movement? : The case of the Informatics School, UNA

The success and sustainability of the Open Educational Resources (OER) movement depends to a large extent on large-scale participation in the use and production of educational resources. The aim of this paper was to explore faculty staff knowledge and behaviors about OER with a focus on resource sharing attitudes. The study was conducted at the School of Informatics of the National University of Costa Rica. Faculty were invited to respond to a questionnaire. The respondents indicated being open to the idea of sharing their own content and, as in other studies, demonstrated existing practices of sharing resources among their colleagues at the local level. However, there is little knowledge about OER and CC licenses, as well as concern about intellectual property rights, factors that hinder their participation in the movement.

The new professionals require higher levels of knowledge, continuous updating of information, and acquisition of technological skills, synthesis and critical thinking in order to adapt to the new economic models. This implies the need for current educational systems to evolve in order to continue preparing people, considering the advantages offered by new information and communications technology. The u-learning or ubiquitous learning is a new learning model available in different channels simultaneously and in a fully distributed environment, describing a series of training activities, supported by the use of technology, which can be accessed anywhere, anyway. This article describes a model of ubiquitous and collaborative teaching and learning using different interaction devices, allowing not only to learn but to acquire communication, cooperation, and teamwork skills continuously. This model was led by a team of Iberoamerican researchers. Besides, a technological platform design is presented in order to support the model proposed, and a preliminary validation is performed using a reduced group of participants, obtaining interesting preliminary results, where the software tool was considered adequate for teachers to create courses in a collaborative and ubiquitous manner, and for students to participate in a better way. A validation with a bigger group of students and teachers is proposed for a further work.

This article analyzes trends in ubiquitous learning research during the period 2000-2015. We searched for articles in English and Spanish that specifically addressed the topics of "ubiquitous learning" or "aprendizaje ubicuo". The selected papers were analyzed in the following categories: target population, subject area, type of contribution, country, publication media and type of paper. The results indicate that most of the initiatives are directed towards primary education; they do not address a specific subject area; and they contribute to the ubiquitous learning domain with the development of technology platforms. The country that has a dominant presence is Taiwan; the more prevalent publication journals are Computers and Education and Journal of Educational Technology & Society; and the kind of articles that are published have an orientation towards practical applications. The results serve as reference for educators and researchers who wish to contribute to this domain of knowledge, and for government authorities and educational institutions planning to promote and facilitate ubiquitous learning.

Motivating Students Through Positive Learning Experiences: A Comparison of Three Learning Designs for Computer Programming Courses

    Get PDF
Based on the assumption that wellbeing influences learning, the aim of this paper is to provide insight  into students’ emotional responses to different learning designs. By comparing three different learning designs their respective influence on students’ feelings about and motivation for learning is discussed. This experimental, controlled comparison study was conducted in an introductory computer programming course. The three learning designs were: 1. A classical teacher-lead course; 2. A problem based learning (PBL) course; and 3. A PBL course combined with the use of LEGO Mindstorms Robots.Three different studies were used for data collection: 1. A questionnaire survey with 229 students from groups exposed to the three different learning designs; 2. Six qualitative walk-alongs collecting data from these groups by informal interviews and observations; 3. Class room observations. Findings from the three studies were discussed in three focus group interviews with 10 students from each learning design. The research was conducted among first year students in Computer Science at the Informatics School, Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica.
